« Newtonian simulations under the spell of General Relativity »

Thomas Tram

N-body simulations are usually performed in a Newtonian approximation, where matter follows Newtonian dynamics on top of a homogeneously expanding background. This approximation is sufficient for analysing current Large-Scale Structure (LSS) data, but upcoming experiments probe increasingly larger volumes where this approximation eventually breaks down. In the absence of relativistic species and in an LCDM universe, it is known that N-body simulations are in agreement with perturbative General Relativity (GR) provided that they are interpreted in the N-body gauge. In this talk I will show how to maintain this simple correspondence in cosmologies with photons, massless neutrinos, massive neutrinos and quintessence.
